The need for fresh air in public or private rooms is more than necessary, as it is healthier and easier to inhale. In order not to have to constantly open and close the windows and create large heat losses in winter and cold in summer, Heat recovery units are used. What they serve and what they represent, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the subtleties of their service will be discussed below.
What it is and what it is used for
Recuperation is the process by which the exhaust air is used to heat or cool the newcomer. In order to implement the process in reality, there is a so-called recuperative unit, allowing the creation of a suction and discharge system, which respectively expels the already exhaust air from the room and supplies new fresh air from outside. This is actually the task of the ventilation system. Another task is to heat the outside air in winter to about 20-25 °C, and in summer to cool it.
In winter, the air released from the room into the environment will be warm, and in summer - cooled. This naturally leads to losses of excess energy during heating or cooling, which can be used "free of charge" to heat or cool the incoming air flow. And here come the air recuperators, whose purpose is to reduce our electricity bills by 40-80%.
At the heart of the heat recovey units is a heat exchanger with two fans, through which pass both air streams - supply and exhaust. When the ventilation system is in heating mode, it does not emit heating up to +20 °C from the room air, and its temperature is only +2 °C. At the same time, the incoming air is not at a temperature of -16 °C, but is heated to +3 or + 4 °C. In this way, great savings are actually achieved, reducing electricity costs by approximately 2 times.
These devices are designed so that there is no mixing between the two separate inlet and outlet air streams. This prevents the danger of outgoing odors entering the incoming air stream.
Heat recovery units are used in home ventilation systems and are often used for apartments or houses.
Advantages and disadvantages
Regarding the advantages of heat recovery units, we assume that everything is clear - they are designed for significant savings in heating or cooling the air supplied to the room. Like all useful devices, these have their drawbacks:
- They create additional air resistance in the installation, which requires the installation of a more powerful compensation fan. It is important to specify that this resistance is not large and does not require a significant increase in power when choosing a fan.
- The use of heat recovery units increases the cost of the ventilation system, as well as the cost of its maintenance. Practice to date shows that the benefits of savings far outweigh the costs of maintaining the installation.
- Reversible, chamber and to a much lesser extent plate heat recovery units have one significant drawback, which in some cases can be critical (when used in a hospital, for example). The danger comes from the possible mixing of incoming and outgoing air streams and the return of viruses to other rooms of the infectious ward, for example. To prevent such scenarios, devices with intermediate heat carrier or freon solutions are used in this case.
- The additional use of heat recovery units further increases the size of the ventilation unit, especially when it comes to the use of plate solutions. This is because their heat exchangers work only on the air principle and are larger. This also applies if an intermediate heat transfer device is used due to the presence of two separate heat exchangers.
How it is serviced
As it is probably already clear, the use of heat recovery units is worth the investment and will significantly reduce electricity bills and energy losses for heating and cooling the room air space. Like any air conditioning and technology device, this one needs maintenance and maintenance to work properly.
The manufacturers recommend that the heat recovery units be serviced at least once or twice a year - before the start of the summer and winter seasons. If the operation of the device takes place under conditions of increased load, its maintenance should be even more frequent - quarterly or even monthly.
Maintenance and service begin with a comprehensive diagnosis and determination of the technical condition of the device. Its components are cleaned and the damaged parts are replaced with new ones. The integrity of the housing is checked and, if necessary, the tightness of the system is restored. The wiring and the condition of the electrical conductors are checked and the detected faults, if any, are eliminated.
